When it comes time to replace the windows in your home, you want to make sure you choose the right new windows for your home. Double and single-hung vinyl windows are both common window types that you have more than likely seen in homes but potentially didn't know the terms these different window styles.

Both double-hung and single-hung vinyl windows are great for your home if you know what your home needs.

Both Double & Single-Hung Windows Are Vertical Windows

The biggest similarity between double-hung windows and single-hung windows is that they are both vertical sliding windows. Both windows have two rectangular or square glass panes, with one glass pane on top and one glass pane on the bottom. When you just look at the window, when it is closed, a double-hung window and a single-hung window look exactly the same.

Both double-hung and single-hung windows may also have muntin, which are dividers that are added on the outside of the glass and are just a style element.

Double-Hung & Single-Hung Windows Operate Differently

Double-hung and single-hung vinyl windows may look the same on the outside, but they operate differently.

With a single-hung window, only one of the sashes, or pieces of glass, will move. Usually, the top piece of glass doesn't move. You can move the bottom piece of glass up and door.

With a double-hung window, you can move both sashes, or pieces of glass. You can choose to open the bottom piece of glass or the top piece of glass.

You can even slightly open both the bottom and top pieces of glass in order to create extra ventilation throughout your home. With both the bottom and top pieces of glass open, you can allow warm air to flow out the top of the windows and cool air to flow into your home through the bottom of the window.

Double-hung windowpanes don't just slide up and down; they are also made to tilt inward as well. The inward tilt allows you to easily clean both the inside and outside of the window without having to go outside to clean the window.

From the outside, double-hung and single-hung vinyl windows look the same. They are both vertical sliding windows. However, double-hung and single-hung vinyl windows operate differently. With double-hung windows, you can open both the top and bottom of the window and tilt the window inward in order to clean it and with single-hung windows, only one pane moves. Consider this information when you choose your vinyl replacement windows.
