The rising levels of pollution have made it important for many homes to have some kind of water filter. There are different types of water filters available in the market, but UV water filters are gaining popularity because they can kill disease-causing microorganisms in the water.

As with any water system, a UV water filter will require proper water system maintenance to function effectively. Without proper maintenance, you could be exposed to harmful pathogens in the water. What maintenance steps are required for a UV water filter?

Change the Lamp Regularly

The most important part of your water filter is the lamp that produces the UV rays. Unfortunately, this bulb doesn't last forever. In fact, many of these UV lamps have to be changed approximately once each year.

Unlike regular lamps, your filter's lamp will not burn out. Instead, it's intensity will gradually decrease, a process known as solarizing. Beyond a certain point, the intensity of the lamp will be too low for it to do its job effectively. Some systems come with an alarm that alerts you when you need to change the lamp.

Keep the UV Sleeve Clean

The UV sleeve is made of quartz, and this is where the sediments, minerals, and various contaminants in your water will collect within the filter, keeping them away from the lamp. However, if the buildup of the contaminants is too much, the UV light from the lamp won't reach the water. The sleeve should be cleaned at least once each year. However, if the water you receive contains a lot of contaminants, you may need to do this more frequently.

Check the Pre-Filters

The UV lamp doesn't do all the work in a UV filtration unit. There are other components that also help to clean the water including the carbon and sediment filters that can be used to remove sediments and other contaminants which can damage the UV unit. Check these filters and clean them regularly to keep them functioning as expected.

Follow the User Manual

Going through the user manual is treated as an afterthought when home appliances are bought. However, these documents contain a lot of useful information which can advise you on how to maintain your UV water filter. The manufacturer will provide a lot of instructions with regards to the maintenance of the unit. Not following these instructions strictly could render the unit ineffective or could void your warranty.
